NSS Hansraj organised a Self Defence Workshop for women at Yamuna Khadar slum on April 3, 2019 in collaboration with The Delhi Police. The women were taught different methods of self defence and were educated about their rights which are very important in today's world considering the fact that most of them might be going through some sort of abuse knowingly or unknowingly. NSS Hansraj for past few years has been closely working with families and inhabitants of 'Yamuna Khadar' slum, organising various workshops, literacy and awareness drives from time to time, aiming at strengthening inhabitants of the area at various levels. Immediate attention needs to be paid to a topic like women safety in our country. Not only the authorities, but also the women and the society need to prepare themselves, for which, NSS Hansraj provides a helping hand. We would like to extend our gratitude to 'God Gives Everything' NGO, headed by Poonam ma'am and Ashish sir for their constant support.
Recognising the lax attitude towards safety in the minds of individuals today, NSS Hansraj took the initiative to organise a fire safety workshop a few days ago. Three fire safety officers from Roopnagar Fire Station visited our college with the goal of conveying much needed precautionary fire safety measures to our volunteers and other interested college students. They instructed the students on what to do in case a fire breaks out, and the ways to prevent such a thing from even happening. Additionally, a fire safety workshop was also organised, where students were guided regarding how to operate fire safety equipments. All the volunteers participated in all the activities with extreme enthusiasm and absorbed everything that was presented to them with great interest. It was an enriching experience and everyone left feeling more confident in their own safety.
NSS Hansraj today conducted a College Campus Cleanliness Drive and cleaned leftovers such as paper bits, posters and banners after the recently concluded college fest Confluence '19. The aim of this drive wasn't only to make the campus clean but also spread awareness among the students for cleanliness, hygiene and proper sanitation. It is also a message for all the college going students who find exploring fests amazing yet overlook their duties regarding cleanliness and dumping of wastes into the dustbin. We believe we have taken one step in the right direction and would request everyone to join this initiative. Let's enjoy the fest seasons while keeping the campus neat and clean.

The best entries were awarded for their creativity. It was followed by an awareness seminar regarding menstrual health, which was attended by a number of female inhabitants of the slum. Keeping in mind the crucial importance of hygiene and sanitation, NSS Hansraj also organised cleanliness and personal hygiene contests, and the top three cleanest houses were acclaimed with prizes. The event concluded by a plant sapling donation drive, wherein we inspired people to increase green cover around their house. It was followed by the final discussion with the volunteers regarding their experience and the positivity that they encountered spreading smiles and happiness. Moving forward with the 'Swachh Bharat Mission', N.S.S. Hansraj successfully conducted a 'Plogging Drive' on 23rd February, 2019. The volunteers began from the Main Gate of the College to go around the college campus and covered three different routes, including some nearby parks. The drive started at 8:00 A.M. and everyone took part in the drive enthusiastically. The remarkable enterprise received a sensational response from the masses. As the volunteers told the joggers about their motive, the joggers also enthusiastically got involved in the initiative and even promised to keep doing this in the future. This effort of the N.S.S. received open-mouthed praise from all the onlookers. We are extremely grateful for the wholehearted cooperation by all the volunteers.
'We make a life by what we give.' NSS Hansraj added one more golden feather to its crown by organising an Animal Food Donation Drive which is an extension of the renowned Project Aahar. The primary motive of Project Aahar is to channelize the leftover food from PGs and hostels to our needy brothers and sisters who are unable to manage a 2-time meal. After the success of Aahar, we extended our support and love to animals through Animal Food Donation Drive by collecting animal foods and green vegetables from college students and donating these to stray dogs, cats and cattle in the streets. The volunteers participate in the donation drive on a regular basis, and contribute to eliminating hunger across species. The satisfaction we receive from works like this inspire us to take part in social service with more enthusiasm and pleasure. We would like to thank all those who donated food for animals, and our volunteers for their dedicated efforts!
NSS Hansraj organised a visit to Arya Mahila Vridh Ashram, an old age home for women to mark the concluding day of Love Week 2019, with much love and gratitude. The event took a forward step up by a mass interactive session between the team and the residents. Chuckles of joy and happiness started dispersing as the interaction proceeded, which then was followed by a gaming and dancing session. The meeting turned out to be a two-way street as everyone was very supportive and interactive. As the clock striked to lunch timings, the volunteers zealously served the lunch to the beneficiaries. NSS Hansraj focuses primarily over bringing eternal joy into the lap of unprivileged which is achieved by such events during the Love Week. NSS Hansraj commenced the Love Week with an intimate visit to Rashtriya Prigya Drishti Sansthan, an organization that caters to look after the blind. The smiles that spread across their faces as soon as the team reached the destination was overwhelming. As the volunteers began interacting with them, we soon heard happy voices which for long had remained silent. Talents overflowed as we heard melodious voices lighting up the small antakshari that we arranged for them, which was followed up by a 'Guess the song' competition. The activities soon took a playful turn when the volunteers engaged their audiences in shayari, poems and stand up comic acts to brighten up everyone's mood. The volunteers had a wonderful time, and the feedback that we received from the blind people staying in the organisation made everyone feel glad. Thanks is due for our volunteers and the core committee of the Rashtriya Prigya Drishti Sanshthan for their enthusiasm and continuous support.
We, at NSS Hansraj, realise the need for sensitising people regarding accidents and mishaps happening everyday, and the thousands of lives that are lost due to absence of primary first aid knowledge in people. Tackling the same issue, N.S.S. Hansraj conducted a First Aid Workshop in Yamuna Khadar Slum, wherein the residents were made aware of adopting primary measures for frequent emergencies. The campaign was led by Dr. Satish from Chacha Nehru Government Hospital explaining the general mishaps like dog bite, sudden chills, burns, breathing difficulties and the curative nursing for each. He also engaged with the questions from the masses regarding the same. In parallel, a sensitisation programme about general health, aimed at children, was also conducted and was received warmly. N.S.S aspires to spread utmost awareness amongst the slum dwellers so that they can be able to tackle any minor accident meanwhile averting any further damage. We would like to thank Dr. Satish and our volunteers for their everlasting support and contribution!
The Social Entrepreneurship Wing inaugurated its stitching camp at Anand Parbat in collaboration with Enactus Ramjas lately, namely Project Manzar. The occasion was joyous, as the wing strives to make it a successful attempt towards improving the social and economic status of women living in the neighbourhood. NSS Hansraj aims at helping the unprivileged poor ladies by employing them to sew bags for which all the raw materials along with sewing machines are provided by the organizers. Neighbourhood women collect at the workplace in their allotted day hours and sew bags and get paid accordingly. All the profit that is earned on selling those bags is used for the betterment of these women. NSS endeavours to remove poverty by making these women self-reliant so they can work and earn for themselves through the move; hence making society a better place to live for all.
NSS Hansraj organised a voting pledge ceremony to commemorate the National Voters' Day, and to sensitise people about the immense power that their vote carries. The event was graced by the graceful persona of our Principal, Dr. Rama and Mr. Ram Avatar Tyagi, the S.H.O. of Maurice Nagar Police Station, along with Sh. Priyadarshini, the Manager of Canara Bank, Hansraj College. The event did go a long way to sensitise people about their electoral power, and inspired them to make change by voting. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all guests of honour for taking time out from their schedules, and our volunteers for their help and support!
It is rightly said that you should not think of organ donation as giving up a part of yourself to keep a stranger alive rather it's a stranger assimilating you in entirety to keep a part of you alive. NSS Hansraj organised a seminar on Organ Donation on 17th January, 2019 which was addressed by Ms. Sunayana Arora Singh from Organ India, Parashar Foundation, through which she brought up the importance of organ and tissue donation. The interactive session culminated with queries put up by the students to bring the best out of the seminar conducted. A visual presentation was also given to impart a great deal of knowledge to stress upon the need of organ donation. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Sunayana Arora Singh, Dr. Romila Rawat Bisht - our programme officer, and all the volunteers who attended the session
NSS Hansraj carried forward with the Computer Literacy Programme on 13th January 2019. With the increasing importance of computers in our daily lives, NSS volunteers joined hands to teach the students of slum areas about computers. The programme is planned to be carried on alternate Sundays and this session was a great success. We would like to thank our volunteers for their indispensable support!
Cleanliness and order are not matters of instinct; they are matters of education and like most great things, you must cultivate a taste for them. - Benjamin Disraeli NSS Hansraj celebrated the hard work put in by the students who interned under the Swachh Bharat Internship Programme by Government of India in the summer of 2018. The internship programme was a step to ensure that the youth of the country makes the rural areas aware of the importance of hygiene and sanitation through field work, and hence devising solutions for the same. The programme head started with a moving address by Dr. Monika Koul regarding 'The Swachh Bharat Campaign', in which she underlined the various aspects of the movement and their crucial importance to our society. It was followed by the interns sharing their experience with the audience through presentations and speech addresses. The event was concluded by the awarding of the certificates by Dr. Romila Rawat Bisht and Dr. Monika Koul to various participants, followed by a vote of thanks. We would like to thank Dr. Romila Ma'am, Dr. Monika Koul Ma'am and our volunteers for marking the event with their gracious presence.
The winters are knocking at the door as Delhi gets prepared for another season of chilling, spine freezing winter. While we might be cosy, comfortable in the warmth of our own homes, do we realise the plight of the ones that do not have means to cover themselves on the streets? NSS Hansraj has always endeavoured to extend a helping hand towards our downtrodden brethren of Yamuna Khadar Slum Area, and along the same lines, we conducted a donation drive of woollen clothes on 16th December 2018. The woollen clothes and blankets that were donated at 'The Wall of the Kindness' were distributed to the needy as they blessed us with radiant smiles and warmth. Thanks are due to the staff and students of the college for donating the clothes, your contribution shall always be cherished, the smiles of the needy always reminding us of the same.
Cold days, warm hearts and charitable hands when together, bring the sweetest smiles on innocent faces. NSS Hansraj is overwhelmed with the feeling of 'sukoon' as we organized a winter clothes collection drive in the college and were imbursed with loads of love and woollens from students and staff members, who contributed to this noble deed with all their hearts. The flight of happiness and 'sukoon' took off on 26th November, 11:00 P.M. on the streets of Barfkhana, Ghantaghar, Shaktinagar Chowk and Vijay Nagar when the collected clothes, blankets, jackets and other woollen stuff was donated to our brothers and sisters on the streets without proper resources to keep them warm in cold nights. The warmth of the smiles of our peers on the streets filled us with immense energy and satisfaction. The most recognised proverbs that we all have been hearing since childhood that "charity begins at home" and "sharing is caring" were brought to life as we felt immersed in those emotions.
Squander less, feed more. With Project Aahar, share love galore! It is rather too painful to see hundreds of homeless and poor people go to bed with an unfilled stomach each day. It is even more depressing to not be able to extend a helping hand and watch these people starve miserably. But, no more! The Environment and Disaster Management Wing of NSS Hansraj College brings to you Project Aahar! A programme that has now been functional for two whole months, Project Aahar aims at providing nutritious food to these underprivileged individuals by channelising the excess food collected from various PGs and student accommodations all across the Delhi University campus such as Stanza Living PG, Mannat PG and Shreya PG to be channelised to areas like Ghanta Ghar which are typically inhabited by such people. These food drives are conducted at around 10 in the night with volunteers and coordinators of the numerous wings collecting the extra food that would otherwise have been discarded, and distributing it among children, women and other vulnerable sections of the aforementioned areas. On Diwali, under the same program, we also donated sweets to these brothers and sisters of ours on this festive occasion. We offer our sincere thanks to all the contributors of this sublime cause. To see the smiles of gratitude and love pouring out from the faces of the less privileged, is indeed a pleasure indescribable in words and thus, Team NSS Hansraj invites each one of you to participate in this noble initiative!
Stepping up from the usual celebrations confined to the college walls and homes, we made sure that the festivities trickle down to the ground seed where all the inhabitants of the Yamuna Khadar slum came together, and celebrated Diwali as a community. NSS Hansraj visited Yamuna Khader slum area on the Diwali Eve and made it a joyful one by lightening some diyas with the slum dwellers. Having decorated the entire slum area, we also made sure to dance to our favourite groove with the kids. The masses were also made aware of the mythological reasoning behind Diwali, and were advised not to burn crackers as well. The celebrations culminated with the distribution of food items, and the extension of best wishes to all. We are glad to have wiped out the darkness through the lightening of those diyas, and to have marked their lives with colours and celebrations. A Happy Diwali to everyone, let's celebrate this Diwali by celebrating it with everyone, because that's what its true essence is, right?
In order to celebrate the Birth Anniversary of the 'Iron Man of India'- Sardar Vallabhai Patel, NSS organised a gathering of volunteers and the core team members to take 'Unity Pledge' and 'Integrity Pledge'. With the enthusiastic turn out of over 50 members, it was pledged by all to uphold the values of 'Unity in Diversity' and develop the same harmony and respect for every community, religion and tradition to follow the footsteps of this selfless leader and stand together for a United India. The 'Integrity Pledge' too was a subtle reminder of the absolute necessity of integrating a diverse country like ours in every scenario. The pledge taking ceremony was followed by a 'Run for Unity' programme, which commemorated the very ethics and values that we stand for. We would love to thank all the volunteers for their enthusiastic support!
We, at NSS Hansraj, take great pride in sharing with you all the success of the third session of the computer literacy programme held on this Sunday in the Yamuna Khadar Slum area. In the modern era where computers are indispensable to our existence, little do we pay attention to the fact that the inhabitants of slums do not have access to computer systems unlike us. These children usually don't know as to how to deal with these complex systems. To nurture the very roots of our society, our volunteers took a great initiative to spread basic computer skills like MS-Word, Ms- Excel and how to switch on and off a computer system. This is indeed a pride-worthy step towards ensuring that the children could walk shoulder to shoulder with their spirits as well as heads held high.
The radiance of lanterns, the shimmer of glitters, the aroma of cuisines, the delight of games and the cooperation of beautiful hearts - that's to sum up the Diwali Mela of N.S.S. Hansraj. N.S.S. Hansraj successfully celebrated the Diwali Mela 2018 on the 25th of October. There was something to cater to everyone's interests - a plethora of delicious food for the foodies, exciting games for the game lovers and exquisite artworks ranging from paintings to lanterns for art-lovers. Not to forget, the charm of the festivities was a very exciting game of Mario functioning as a video booth, which was also extremely beautiful to gaze at and had been created by the efforts of diligent volunteers. Finally, the whole team of N.S.S. Hansraj would like to extend its gratitude to all the visitors and turning this humble initiative into a grand success and contributing for a noble cause. Also without the cooperation from the volunteers, it would not have been possible to put up an event at such a huge scale. We would love to thank you all, and hope to see you again at Diwali Mela 2019!
A street theatre performance was organised by NSS Hansraj for the inhabitants of the Yamuna Khadar slum area. The Nukkad Natak, "Wajood", performed by Sukhmanch Theatre Group, explored different gender roles and the inherent need to acknowledge these identities and to do away with every form of discrimination. The plot also dealt with the importance of breaking down numerous social stereotypes which restrict women from voicing their opinions even to this day. With the hope of building a more inclusive society which embraces people for "who they are", NSS Hansraj hopes to witness and undertake many more such events in the days to come!
To mark the culmination of the 'Joy Of Giving' week, Team NSS Hansraj visited 'Bachchon Ka Ghar', an orphanage in Daryaganj. Beginning with an interactive session with the children, we organized a drawing activity for these innocent minds, the theme for which was the ambition of the children. The volunteers also helped the members of the orphanage in serving food. Having relished the food, the children joined the team of volunteers in playing 'Jump In, Jump Out', a game that made the little ones roar with laughter. Team NSS also donated rice and bedsheets to the underprivileged. It is with immense sincerity and pleasure, that we thank the staff at 'Bachchon Ka Ghar' for their cooperation and, the volunteers for being so sensitive to the needs of others and investing their time and effort.
Embarking upon the legacy of the 'Joy of Giving' Week, NSS Hansraj felt ecstatic to visit 'Humsafar Trust', an organisation working for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. The visit started off with discussions regarding the Section 377 and how the conservative Colonial Law had been such a threat to the dignity of the LGBTQ+ before its decriminalisation lately, which was followed by discussions about HIV-AIDS. To make the event fun-filled, the volunteers relished to play Pictionary and Antakshari with the members of the community. A token of love, in the form of a rainbow coloured heart badge, was also gifted to the Trust. The visit came to its culmination with the cutting of the cake to commemorate the decriminalisation of Section 377. Thanks are due to the Humsafar Trust and our enthusiastic volunteers!
'There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something tomorrow.' On the third day of 'Joy of Giving Week', NSS Hansraj organised a visit to CanSupport, an organisation working wholeheartedly for the happiness and care for cancer patients. The visit commenced with volunteers interacting with them in a lively manner, and also engaging them in fun games of Antakshari. What followed was an exultant session of dance, grooving to musical notes. The volunteers also initiated a discussion about the happy memories in their lives, so as to instil in them a sense of strength to battle their illness, and also donated fruits, juices and biscuits. Having had a sense of fulfilment after the visit, the event did end on a positive note for all! We would love to extend our gratitude to the staff of CanSupport for their eternal support!
"Of all the languages in the world, smile is the most powerful, effective and inclusive." On the second day, NSS Hansraj took the flags of 'Joy of Giving' week to the Azadpur branch of Noida Deaf Society, a school for the speech and hearing impaired children. The NSS team was greeted by sixty beautiful children and eleven trainers at the school. After an introductory session, the children were divided into three groups and gathered in different classrooms to indulge in fun games and activities. From urging them to paint their dreams on a paper to playing an innovative signal Musical chair, Memory tiling and the Elephant in the group, we made sure the special day is equally recreational and educational for the children. The visit ended with the prize distribution where the children taught us how to smile for your friends' success and how to clap so loud so as to make sure that the children were actually able to listen to the same. We thank the trainers at the school for their cooperation and help, the volunteers for their enthusiastic response and the children for teaching us so much about human values in so little time.
"Without respecting its past, the present cannot look forward to a promising future." The volunteers of NSS Hansraj started the 'Joy of Giving' week by taking the blessings of the elderly residing at Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. The volunteers were briefed by the authorities about the plight of senior citizens who are abandoned by their next of kin. They narrated some of their past experiences in the field which were both heart-breaking and eye-opening. The volunteers visited the medical ward of the old age home where the patients were under constant surveillance of the doctors and nurses, and were received with wide smiles and divine blessings in the resting ward where they spent about an hour and a half interacting with them and dancing to the tunes of their favourite songs. The realisation that followed the interaction was really intriguing - the abandoned senior citizens who live in old age homes have lots of stories to tell and talents to display, but they seldom come across the ready-to-listen ears and welcoming eyes. The visit that rather started with a lot of energy and enthusiasm left the entire team with tearful eyes and in a state of introspection - of the society's behaviour towards those who paved its path of success and glory.
N.S.S. Hansraj recently organised a computer literacy programme in the Yamuna Khadar slum area. Computers have come to be indispensable to the modern world, and keeping that in mind, some basic information about the computer and its functions was imparted to the youth of the slum. The basic course dealt with switching a computer on and off, with navigation, internet browsing and applications like MS word. The programme would be carried forward on every alternate Sunday of the month. N.S.S. looks forward to this initiative wholeheartedly!
NSS Hansraj commemorated NSS Day to mark the celebrations of the inherent values of our eternal goal! A Flash Mob was conducted on Plastic Waste Prevention, in College Campus as well as at the Vishvavidyalaya Metro Station. The enthusiastic participants sensitised people by holding the spectators spellbound by their stunning way of spreading awareness. Moreover, a 'Best Out of Waste' competition was organised in which the creative volunteers created beautiful artefacts out of waste, transforming trash articles like plastic bottles, cups etc to some very useful commodities. Also, a 'Plogging Drive', an activity wherein trash is collected alongside jogging, was organised in which the hard-working volunteers gathered at the college gate before the commencement of classes and cleaned the surrounding area. It was a very enthusiastic effort as the volunteers worked very tirelessly. We would like to convey our thanks to the volunteers for their enthusiastic support!
The Rural Development and The Environment and Disaster Management wings of NSS Hansraj joined hands to organise a survey for the inhabitants of Yamuna Khadar lately. The survey aimed at identifying the number of households possessing Aadhar and ration cards. The volunteers from both the wings came to the following conclusion - Almost all the inhabitants hold Aadhar cards but a relatively less number of them are ration card holders. The drinking water supplied is usually clean but the sole source, a hand pump, usually proves to be inadequate for the entire slum population. Meanwhile, the volunteers from the Environment Wing also sensitised people about the importance of maintaining hygienic surroundings, and regarding a contest wherein the cleanest household in the slum would be awarded attractive prizes. The survey, indeed, provided us with statistical insights into the status quo of the developments in the slum. We would like to thank all the volunteers for their dedicated response!
"Elections remind us not only of our rights but the responsibilities of citizenship in a democracy." Hansraj College went into the polls for Students' Union with great enthusiasm and fervour this year as well. But, unfortunately, the election campaign left the campus in shambles, because of thousands of pamphlets and posters used to promote the candidates, scattered on roads and in the college grounds.
